A Brief Overview of Gambia

Most Gambians are bilingual and can speak English, as the country is a former British colony. Life is taken at a relaxed pace and the people are friendly.

If invited to a Gambian home it is polite to bring a small gift. You may also try local Gambian dishes like Benachin (rice and vegetables) or Domoda (stewed meat). The main tribes in the country are the Mandinka, Wolof, Fula, and Jola, each of which have their own languages and traditions.

The country is predominantly Muslim but there is no strict adherence the Sharia Law. "This is a country that remains devout in its faith but wears its religion lightly."
